Wow, that was fairly psychedelic. Fly High with the AF, I suppose.
Anyway, not much of any value to add today except I should let you both know that I finally have a permanent job. The department of Student Organizations (and Activities? I forget) at the University offered me a job. Seems like it'll be a pretty good one.
Also this past week in our Culture of the 60s class we had a guest lecturer. He's the Chair of the History Department and was in 'Nam back in the early 60s before it was really getting much publicity or widespread criticism. He had quite a few interesting things to say; however, my mind is a bit tired to really recall much. Hopefully I can remember some tomorrow.
I just listened to "Ballad of the Skeletons" featuring Ginsberg, Paul McCartney, and Phillip Glass. It has me in stitches...this is great!
Walker, if you email me your ftp I could probably upload it so you can hear. I'm pretty sure it's out of print so we wouldn't be screwing with legalities.
I added some space after the "comment" line that shows up. It was tailgating the previous posts and driving me nuts.
I'm watching what must be a delayed broadcast of tonight's Democratic presidential debate. I find some of it really interesting. Either of you guys (or any other folks out there reading) have any thoughts on any of these guys?
I'm a Kucinich fan. I would love to see him get the nomination, but I also know that this time around, he doesn't stand much of a chance as he's one of the few to really discuss issues in a way that challenges the way most things are being done and not working. Some of the other guys have good ideas and I'd certainly like to see W out of there, though.
Here's how to use hyperlinks:
Either:
1. Type in what you want your link words to be. Highlight them. Click on the Icon up on the upper right corner with the globe and link (as in a chain link). A box will pop up where you can type in the url.
2. Click the link icon I just mentioned, then once the code is on your "new post" screen, put in the words where they go.
Quick Replies:
--I left the msg at Envoy magazine.
--Thanks for that new link...I'll be checking that out.
--I sent the invite to walker's yahoo account, but he may have more than one and I sent it to the wrong one. Next time I talk to him I'll ask him about it.
Longer Replies:
First, your mother is and has been in my prayers. Stacey's mom told her to mention to me about her surgery. It's good to have an update, thanks! I'll pray Celie and Peter stay safe and that Celie gets better soon...
As far as a movie to see goes, I recommend Big Fish. Walker and Stacey and my roommate Dean and I went and saw it a couple weeks ago. Pretty clean as I remember, very well-done acting and plot and writing. Very interesting story. It's a film where someone who mostly enjoys things for the surface (not always a bad thing) can like it quite a bit for amusing stories and characters plus some romance. Someone who can't help but dig on deeper issues and messages and cinematic elements will find plenty to dig on. I'm still kind of chewing on it, though busy enough that I'm not a ton anymore. Anyway, it has my recommendation.
Okay, one more thing:
I watched that "Whatever Happened to Jack Kerouac?" documentary today....really liked it. I actually sent my professor a note and asked him what had happened to Gregory Corso that would result in his speech impediment. He told me:
"Corso lost his teeth (gum diseases and lack of dental care). He had, I think, an upper dental plate, but he didn't like to wear it. The result was a frequent lisp and slur. He and Burroughs used to make a joke of this, claiming that they lost their teeth "in the thervice." This was an allusion to a friend of Burroughs who claimed to have lost his teeth "in the service" of giving blow jobs."
Funny stuff.
When I logged in to update the blog this morning, Blogger.com had a link up under "recently updated" to the Extreme Catholic blog. Some pretty noteworthy stuff on there.
Be sure to check out the link way down there (or just do a search on Amazon) for a new parody of Left Behind called Kiss My Left Behind. Apparently "W" is the Anti-Christ. I still have a little Christmas money left over and may put it toward that...
Interesting note on the Cuba thing...
Some Orthodox have been critical of the trip. Apparently the Patriarch awarded Fidel with a medal or award or something for his service to the Church through this gift. Folks aren't too happy about this because of Castro's history with Christianity. I suppose it's all in how a person views it. I personally don't have much of a problem with it. I'm not convinced that there's necessarily a 180 degree turn in attitude, motivation, etc., but Fidel didn't have to do this; he chose to, and if the Patriarch chooses to recognize it with an award or recognition, then so be it -- I highly doubt ol' Fidel did this thinking "Wow, I really want to get an award from the Orthodox and impress them!"
I just read the Envoy exchange.
WOW. I called and left a message (after 8pm here) in hopes of reading the entirety of it.
I cannot believe some of the things LaHaye said! The patronizing, condescending tone he took when he ran out of things to say was appalling yet typical.
Thanks so much for the link.
We were snowbound here for a couple days. Walker and I and Stacey actually drove to and from Lincoln in snowstorm weather (to go see a film called Bubba Ho-Tep, hahaha). Schools were closed on Monday and Tuesday as we got about a foot of snow or so.
Those films sound interesting. I've seen that film version of Wise Blood, which is fairly faithful to the book. Obviously so much of the book's psychology is hard to translate to the screen, but I think Huston did a pretty decent job.
I thought you guys might enjoy this story.
The Guardian also has a story linked right next to that one (at least right now, probably changes over time) about the Archbishop of Canterbury currently visiting Jerusalem.
Hey Guys,
Welcome to the new blog. I'm quite excited about this.
If there's anyone else we want to add as a regular contributor, then let me know and I'll invite them.
I'll try and install a comment feature in here soon.
I'm sure my first post will happen in the near future...
